A United Nations (UN) report released yesterday revealed that over 24,000 children worldwide experienced severe physical, mental and psychological torture after being caught in crossfires, hostaged and worst—used as human shields. The 2018 Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict said that the more than 24,000 grave violations against children were verified by the UN in 20 countries. Continued fighting between parties to conflict, new conflict dynamics and operational tactics, combined with widespread disregard for international law, had a devastating effect on children, it said.
